August 28, 2012

[San Diego, CA] – Today, nearly 30 workers at San Diego’s Hilton Mission Valley have filed claims with the State Labor Commissioner for alleged wage theft and other violations of state law by private equity hotelier, HEI Hospitality. The claims, totaling approximately $250,000, allege that HEI has violated California’s labor laws by not paying workers fully for their hours worked and repeatedly denying breaks and rest periods.  The workers represent a quarter of the hourly workforce at the Hilton Mission Valley. Similar claims were filed in recent years by workers at HEI managed hotels in Irvine and Long Beach.

Hotel workers were joined by community members and advocates, including Alor Calderon from the Employee Rights Center and Rabbi Laurie Coskey  from the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice at a press conference earlier today where they shared their own experience with illegal underpayment and other wage and hour violations in San Diego’s hospitality industry.
