Today, dozens of hotel workers at the HEI owned and operated Marriott La Jolla delegated their management to demand a fair process to choose whether they want to form a union. Hotel workers were joined by community allies, including: the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice, students from UC San Diego and Point Loma Nazarene University, the Employee Rights Center, the President of the San Diego Labor Council, and workers from another HEI property in San Diego, the Hilton Mission Valley.
Marriott La Jolla General Manager, Gordon Luster met the delegation and workers expressed their dissatisfaction with wages, benefits, and conditions. After several minutes, Luster unilaterally ended the meeting. The delegation proceeded to the hotel lobby where they were led in a prayer by Reverend Beth Johnson for continued courage in pursuing a voice and respect on the job.
Marriott La Jolla workers have joined six other HEI hotels across the country where workers are standing up and fighting against HEI’s sweatshop working conditions.
